Now that Lebron James has won his fourth Most Valuable Player award in the past five years, I can say something that I never thought I would say. When it comes to the ultimate debate, Jordan or James, I’m picking James. I know I know. That’s blasphemy for someone who grew up in the Michael Jordan Era. I’ve seen Jordan take out my Indiana Pacers, who probably had their best shot at winning a championship. Michael Jordan and Reggie Miller had a beautiful back and forth during that 7 game seven. I’ve seen Jordan do all of his scoring, dunking, playing, leading during the 1990′s. I’ve seen Space Jam, plenty of times. But guess what, when it comes to pure physical game, give me Lebron James. He’s such a specimen of a man that I would gladly take him as the first pick in my pick up game.

He might not reach some of the championship levels that Jordan has reached. But he might get more MVP awards than Jordan at the rate he’s going. And he might be a better all around player than Jordan at the rate James is going. I mean this guy, Lebron James, could possibly average a triple double if he put his head down and did it. This season, he was at 27 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists PER GAME. Did you just look at those numbers? His shooting percentage has gone UP each season. That’s right, his shots have fallen more often as he’s got older. Isn’t that the scary part? Who knows what kind of numbers he might get NEXT SEASON if this trend of an improve shot goes?

I know James won’t come out and say he wants to be better than Jordan, but if he’s got any sort of competitive spirit that we fans want him to have, he would believe that. I think Kobe Bryant wants to be better than Jordan. And those guys are so similar it’s eerie. I mean even in body, they look the same. Which is why with James, I have to give him the edge over Jordan. I do know Jordan could post up every so often. But with so many big men around, I don’t imagine Jordan playing at any position on the floor, and working as well as James does. I mean James could be like Magic Johnson in a way, and play any position you ask him.

I hate having to sit down, and say who I would take as come on, both guys are so good in their own way. But this is the debate that people love to have, and I know I was on Jordan’s side for so many years, and now it just has to be Lebron James. He’s taken the NBA by storm, and he’s dragged me across that line in the sand. It took some pulling, and my body hurts, but you know James is the King.

Are we at the point where we wonder what more can Lebron James do to get better? He’s improved his jump shot. He’s got excellent at passing. He can defend like anyone, especially when it comes to blocking shots. He can finish at the basket. He’s got that killer instinct when he wants. He’s got the hardware in MVP trophies and NBA championship trophy. What else can he do? Can he get become better than Jordan? Well that remains to be seen, and a few years ago, I would have said not even close. Now, I think the gap has closed.

People will point out that Jordan has more NBA championships, and yes that’s always a measuring stick. But why does that have to be such a big measuring stick? I consider Reggie Miller one of the all time greats, and he doesn’t have any NBA championships. I can understand that to be the greatest of all time, you need one of those. But does Lebron need to match Jordan championship for championship? Some might say Lebron is a better overall player than Jordan. I think physically, he looks ten times better. Jordan had that body to play in his day. But look at Lebron, and what football team wouldn’t want that guy with the physical body he has?

With any greatest of all time argument, it will never end. You might as well compare apples to oranges because there’s way too many variables to go with. Look at the playing style of the Jordan era versus the playing style of Lebron’s era. Look at how much better offenses are playing now. Defense is kind of a lost art in the NBA. You think Jordan couldn’t easily get 25 or more points each time out nowadays?

I think what Lebron James could do if he really put his mind to it, and this could give him the edge over Jordan: average a triple double. I’m still waiting for that year, where James just each time out can throw out 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assits. I think that would complete him as a player, and if he did that, who knows what else he could do? Get quadruple doubles? Looking over the stats for each guy in that category, and you see James has 44 triple doubles right now. Jordan got 31 in his whole career. So therefore, I could see James getting the edge in that overall game feel.

But truly, both guys are great. Lebron is Lebron. Jordan is Jordan. It’s just a wasted breath saying who’s better than who. But hey it’s still fun to compare apples and oranges.
