Looks like the big NBA news of the day is David Stern’s announcement that he will step down effective February 1st, 2014. Adam Silver will be set to take over at that time, and all will be well in the NBA. Looking over his career as commissioner, Stern does deserve credit for expanding the game of basketball. There are so many fans across the world that’s it is amazing to think how far this league has come.

Sure there will be some fans who are applauding this and saying good riddance. For me as a fan, I never cared either way about the commissioner. My job as a fan is to support my team the Indiana Pacers. Sure there were probably times that Stern did something that bugged me, like the Jim Rome incident. But in the long run, what does that mean for the Pacers? Nothing at all. He might have seemed like he was for the big market teams, but the Pacers were successful in the 1990′s and they look to be getting back around now.

He will definitely leave a legacy, and I can’t imagine he’s not one of the better commissioners the NBA has seen. Adam Silver has been Deputy Commissioner under Stern, so I imagine he’ll be the best fit for this job. Stern will get to enjoy the retired life and Silver will get to run one of the major sports. It’s a great time to be a NBA fan as there are teams out there that are exciting and fun to watch.

There’s the Heat that most people want to see lose, so if a team can beat them, that could get them some support. You have a team like the Oklahoma City Thunder with a group of young players, such as Kevin Durant who go out and play the right way. You have a team like the Indiana Pacers and Denver Nuggets with no big superstar, but still a team effort that can carry them far.

You have this young talent with Durant, Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving, John Wall, who look to make that next step up to the elite level. There’s always Lebron James trying to take over Michael Jordan’s spot. That might not happen, but it could be fun to watch what James can do next to elevate his game any higher. David Stern will leave this league in a good place, and he’s earned the respect of the NBA for that.

Well I had seen some mentions of this on Twitter, and caught the actual talking that happened, and have to say I’m actually on Jim Rome’s side with this one. He asked a fair enough question, and all David Stern had to say was I’m not going to answer that, and ask to move on.

But David Stern has always had this snarky side of him, and he took it a step further with the question “well, Jim, do you still beat your wife?” So let’s go from a remark about the NBA, which is David Stern’s company, and jump to someone that is personal and deals with a personal issue. I definitely don’t agree with something like that. I can see if you’re in that line of questioning, then things will come out.

There’s no reason at all for Stern to come out all defensive about this, and the conspiracy theorists will actually use this as fuel for their fire with the way Stern tried to side step it so much. If there’s nothing there, then say that. Or just move on.

Then Stern even throws out the remark “I’ve got more important people to talk to, like Stephen A. Smith.” Now come on, Stephen A Smith is the best way to squash this. He’s not that much above Jim Rome when it comes to throwing out thoughts and trying to get reactions. We all know what Jim Rome does, which is why people love him or hate him in my mind.

So the question is whose side are you on for this fight? David Stern or Jim Rome?
