The big news of this week was where Greg Oden ended up signing, which was the Miami Heat. I can’t believe all the pomp and circumstance of this as it felt like the Dwight Howard thing all over again with the deadlines and people questioning where Oden might sign. I think that’s a good thing for Oden that people are still paying attention to him after what’s been an injury filled career. He hasn’t even played a game since 2009. Just let that sink for a minute. 2009 was the last time Greg Oden has played in the NBA. That’s a good length of time to be away, especially when you think about Oden’s body, and how injury proned he’s been.
But I do believe for the Miami Heat, this isn’t a big risk or even a move that makes them that much better. We don’t even know what Oden can bring to the team at this point, so the Pacers and Bulls are right there ready to contend with the Heat. I do know the Heat wanted to add some big man or else they wouldn’t have made this signing. But I am questioning how much Oden has left to go. He’s played 82 games in two seasons, so essentially, he’s played one season of NBA basketball. For a guy that was the first pick in the 2007 draft, you have to call him a bust. But if he does come back around, maybe he’s a serviceable piece to the Miami Heat.
The Pacers I believe still have the big men that will give the Heat problems. Luis Scola will be a great addition for the team if things go right. Then you have Chris Copeland who’s a bigger forward type that can stretch the floor. Those are some great additions for the team. The Heat didn’t even need to make any moves after winning two out of the past three championships, so I believe this was more of a move for Oden to show what he can do. If he can do anything. I think that’s why it took so much longer for him to find a team. You had to find that right situation, and well if you head to the champs, that’s a pretty good situation. We’ll see come regular season when Oden ends up playing, and if this move really means anything. At this point, I am going with this was just a move for Oden more so than the Heat.
