Just as fans were feeling good about the season, there’s a bit of leeriness with the news that Danny Granger needs a second opinion on the soreness in his knees. There’s no word on how long he will be out, but any length of time could hurt this team. He’s such a big scorer for the team, who is going to step in that role. There’s a quick answer that people will say, Paul George.
Paul George has looked better in preseason and has been more aggressive with his play. With this injury to Granger, he’ll be called upon to become more of a scorer, which could be good or bad. If he’s more aggressive, while being selective with his jump shot, that would be the good. But if he settles into too many bad shots, like Granger has the habit of, then it’s a bad thing. George will have to be careful with the shot selection in my opinion as I would rather him be the drive to the basket type player. He’s got a good shot, but that should be called upon if he’s open or if there’s a need for that shot.
Another player to step up could be a bench guy in Gerald Green. He’s back in the NBA, and got a chance to show that he’s worth the time and effort with the Nets last season. There he averaged 12 points per game, so it would be ideal if he can bring that scoring to the Pacers.
You could even look at Sam Young, a recent pick up and someone who plays the small forward position. He’s played with Memphis the last three years and now could have a chance to jump into the starting lineup thanks to this sudden injury news. But can Sam Young fill the shoes of Danny Granger? Probably not, with his 9 points a game. Maybe he’ll be able to perform well enough to hold his own, and at this point, that’s all the Pacers can ask.
So it will be interesting to see how the Pacers handle this sudden news of Granger, and how they respond to his lack of scoring punch. You look at that Central Division with the Chicago Bulls losing Derrick Rose for a majority of the season, and now with the Pacers losing their star player. Things could get quite interesting in this division as they weren’t interesting enough.
